Soft-diffusion LED fixture producing bounce-light quality illumination without external diffusion materials.
Technical Details
The system weighs 1.2 kg and consists of a foldable steel frame with white ripstop nylon covering. The light distribution is uniform across 360 degrees horizontally and 270 degrees vertically. The Bowens mount is compatible with Aputure 120D, 300D, and 600D LED panels. When folded, the Lantern measures 43 x 8 cm. The diffusion reduces the light output by approximately 1.5 stops compared to the bare LED panel.
History & Development
Aputure launched the Lantern in 2018 as an addition to their COB LED systems. The design is inspired by traditional Chinese paper lanterns, which were already used as improvised film lights in the 1920s. An improved version followed in 2020 with a more stable frame and more precise color temperature control. The development responded to the growing demand for practical, mobile 360-degree light sources for low-budget productions.
Practical Use in Film
The Lantern is suitable for even room illumination indoors, especially for dialogue scenes or as a practical light source. Roger Deakins used similar 360-degree setups in "1917" for natural-looking tent lighting. Typical workflow: Mount LED panel on a C-stand, attach Lantern, position centrally in the room. Advantage: No hard shadows, even illumination of all faces in group conversations. Disadvantage: Little control over light direction, potential overexposure of the ceiling.
Comparison & Alternatives
The Aputure Lantern competes with the Chimera Lantern (larger, more expensive) and DIY China balls (cheaper, more fragile). Unlike directional softboxes, it produces omnidirectional light without flagging possibilities. Modern LED spheres like the Creamsource Vortex offer similar functionality with integrated control. Use the Lantern on a limited budget and when natural, undirected lighting is desired – use a softbox or Fresnel for precise light control.
