Professional HMI lighting fixture engineered for optimal color rendering and minimal flicker in digital cinema.
Technical Details
The True Blue series encompasses power classes from 650W to 18kW, with the most common models being 1K, 2K, and 5K. A 2K True Blue achieves approximately 16,000 lux at a distance of one meter with a full spot setting. The fixtures operate with standard tungsten-halogen lamps (T1, T2, T3 depending on wattage) and feature a mechanical focus system with a rotary knob. The housing is made of black aluminum with cooling fins, and the Fresnel lens has a diameter ranging from 150mm (1K) to 300mm (5K). Barn doors and a gel frame are integrated as standard.
History & Development
Arri introduced the True Blue series in 1982 as an evolution of their classic studio Fresnel spotlights. They arose from the need to create reliable tungsten fixtures for the growing location film production industry. In 1995, a revision followed with improved heat dissipation and more robust focusing mechanisms. Starting in 2005, Arri supplemented the series with flicker-free electronic ballasts for special applications, while the basic design has remained unchanged to this day.
Practical Use in Film
True Blues function as workhorses for key light, fill light, and background illumination. Cinematographer Roger Deakins used 5K True Blues for candlelit scenes in "Barry Lyndon"-esque setups, with the tungsten characteristic producing warm skin tones. For interior shots, 2K True Blues are often positioned through windows to simulate daylight – combined with CTB (Color Temperature Blue) gel for correction to 5600K. Their mechanical robustness makes them the first choice for long shooting days and changing locations.
Comparison & Alternatives
Compared to modern LED panels, True Blues offer a continuous spectrum without color spikes, but with higher power consumption and heat generation. Competing products like Mole-Richardson Senior or LTM Pepper deliver comparable light quality with similar construction. Since 2010, Arri SkyPanel and other LED systems have increasingly displaced tungsten fixtures, as they dim without color temperature shift and consume significantly less power. However, True Blues remain the standard for productions that deliberately require the warm tungsten characteristic and absolute color reliability.
