Advanced lighting control system managing modular power distribution for extensive film production lighting rigs.

Technical Details

The BB&S Pipeline system is based on special multicore cables with 37 or 61 conductors (12x3 + neutral + ground), embedded in robust rubber or PUR sheathing. At the endpoints are distribution boxes with 12 CEE outlets each, rated at 16A or 32A, enabling a total output of up to 230 kW at 400V three-phase. The cables have an outer diameter of 28-35mm and are designed for temperatures ranging from -25°C to +70°C. Variants exist as permanently installed floor conduits, retractable cable reel systems, and modular connectors for complex set configurations.

History & Development

Best Boy & Gaffer Services developed the Pipeline system in 1994 in response to the growing lighting demands of large film productions. It was first used at Babelsberg Studios for international co-productions. In 2001, BB&S introduced digital load monitoring, followed in 2008 by DMX-integrated versions for remote-controlled dimmers. Since 2015, hybrid-compatible variants have been available, capable of powering traditional tungsten and modern LED systems with different voltage requirements.

Practical Application in Film

On "Downfall" (2004), the BB&S Pipeline facilitated the lighting of the 80-meter-long bunker set via two central power input points. Typical workflows involve initial cabling by the Electrical Department in the morning, followed by the gradual activation of individual circuits according to the shooting schedule. Advantages include reduced cable runs and increased safety through professional connectors. Disadvantages arise with spontaneous set changes, as the Pipeline structure is less flexible than individual cables.

Comparison & Alternatives

The BB&S Pipeline differs from standard power distribution units through integrated multicore transmission instead of bundled individual cables. Modern alternatives such as the ARRI SkyPanel Power Management System or LEE Filters PowerCON networks offer similar functionalities with digital monitoring. For smaller productions (budget under €500,000), conventional CEE cable chains are typically used, while Pipeline systems become economically viable from mid-sized productions onwards.
