You need a sharp, rectangular edge of light on a face or a specific zone — that's where you reach for the box filter. The device is basically a box made of plywood or metal, open at the top or equipped with interchangeable baffles, which you place directly in front of your light. Unlike a Fresnel or a softbox: here you don't get a shimmering, washed-out edge, but a geometrically clean demarcation between light and shadow.
Its practical strength lies in control. If you fold down one or more of the four side walls — some call these wings or flags — you can selectively cut off the light. Do you only want a narrow slit of light on the forehead? Close both side walls and leave only a gap open. Do you need a side edge without spill light on the background board? Simply lower the respective side. This works better and faster than constantly wrapping with black wrap or positioning additional flags — the box filter sits directly at the source, saving you setup time and allowing for quick adjustments.
On set, this is particularly worthwhile for close-up work or when you need very precise modeling lights. Portraits, beauty shots, product photography — anywhere a hard, geometric edge of light makes dramatic sense. You can also combine several box filters in succession or use it as an additional layer of control in front of a softbox head if you like the diffused base but still need clean edges. Make sure the box is large enough to prevent heat buildup — LED lights are more forgiving in this regard; with HMI or tungsten, you should maintain distance and possibly drill small ventilation holes. Can be equipped with diffusion gels or color filters (as with other modifiers, via frames) — box filters are not one-trick ponies but are flexibly applicable.
The investment is manageable: you can build a good box filter yourself or simply buy one. Anyone who regularly works with hard, shaped lights and doesn't want to constantly set up complex flag constructions will quickly wonder why they didn't have one in their toolkit sooner.
