On set, it happens constantly: the director wants to shoot the scene in a different corner, the sunlight shifts, or you simply have two hours for an entire loft. That's when you grab what's lying around — old cinema lights from the last production, 2K Blondes without lenses, reflectors that already have scratches, or in a pinch, a work light from the nearest hardware store. That's bricolage lighting: setting lights without luxury, without planning, with the means available at the moment.
The practice behind it is honest: perfection is unrealistic, so you optimize quickly. You set up the 1K spotlight without a diffuser because the diffuser is elsewhere right now — and simply mix the hardness with a white reflector. The key light comes from the left, the eyes are exposed, the contrast is right. Not elegant, but technically sound. Bricolage lighting doesn't mean sloppiness, but pragmatism under pressure. You create visual quality with limited resources and time budget.
This classically works in documentaries, low-budget indie productions, or quick commercial shoots. The cinematographer and the gaffers know each other, they exchange a few words, the 1K goes in, the reflectors are ready. Five minutes later, you're lighting the shot. The trick: less is more. One clear light source beats three confused ones. A large reflector replaces a complete additional fixture for you. Old spotlights often still have the best color temperature stability because the bulb simply runs correctly.
The risk lies in consistency across multiple takes — your improvisation must be reproducible. That's why you photograph the positions, note the heights, remember which reflector was at what angle. Bricolage lighting is controlled improvisation, not chaos. Those who master it work faster than the professional with ten fixtures that all need to be precisely positioned. And in the end, the image often doesn't show that it was created under time pressure — that's the real mastery.
