Historically, the term originates from painting and portrait photography, where this frontal side perspective conveys dignity and clarity.
On set, a broadside functions as a deliberate visual statement. You use it when the silhouette, facial structure, or physical width of an object are meant to be communicative — think of identification portraits, comparisons, or architectural documentation. The lack of depth effect eliminates distraction and forces the viewer to concentrate on form and surface. No vanishing points, no spatial recession — pure geometry. Lighting requires careful consideration: with side lighting, a harsh profile can quickly emerge, swallowing details. You usually combine key and fill light to model the entire surface without breaking the frontality.
In practice, you will frequently encounter broadside shots in identification photos (mugshots, official portraits), for visual comparisons of two characters side-by-side, or when documenting architectural facades. Feature films use it sparingly — it appears formal, sometimes even distancing — but this can be precisely the intention.
