Camera Set

Script supervisor's call confirming the camera is ready to roll, signaling the director that the take can begin.

Technical Details

After the "Camera Set" command, focal length, aperture (typically f/2.8 to f/5.6), focus plane, framing, and camera movements are finalized. For digital cameras, this also includes color temperature (usually 3200K or 5600K), ISO values (standard 800-1600), and frame rate (24fps standard). The focus puller has defined their focus marks on the follow focus, and the camera assistant has logged the distance measurements. In Steadicam shots, "Camera Set" means the system is perfectly balanced and the operator has assumed their starting position.

History & Development

The command evolved in the 1920s alongside the professionalization of silent film production. It originally stemmed from theatrical tradition, where "Curtain Up" signaled a ready state. With the introduction of sound film in 1927, the command sequence was expanded to include "Sound Rolling." Modern digital productions have added "Record Rolling" and, for remote shoots, "Video Village Ready."

Practical Application in Film

Kubrick's "Barry Lyndon" (1975) documented minute-long preparation times until "Camera Set" due to extreme candlelight setups. In "1917" (2019), "Camera Set" signaled the start of complex one-shot sequences with precisely choreographed camera movements over distances of 400 meters. In TV productions, the time between setup and "Camera Set" is reduced to an average of 8-12 minutes, while feature films require 20-45 minutes.

Comparison & Alternatives

"Rolling" indicates an ongoing recording, while "Camera Set" marks the static ready state. "Rehearsal" occurs before "Camera Set," and the "Martini Shot" (the last shot of the day) follows. For multi-camera setups, "All Cameras Set" is used. Remote productions utilize "Stream Active" as a digital equivalent when cameras are controlled via fiber optic or 5G connections.
