In cloudy bright conditions, diffuse daylight typically reaches 1000-4000 lux on the ground, compared to 10,000-25,000 lux in direct sunlight. The dynamic range is reduced to 2:1 to 4:1 instead of the usual 8:1 to 16:1 in hard sunlight. The cloud layer scatters light evenly from all directions, virtually eliminating hard shadows. Modern digital cameras can easily operate at ISO 800-1600, while film stock required at least 500 ASA. The bluish shift in the spectrum requires color correction or appropriate filtering.

The systematic use of cloudy bright lighting conditions began with the French New Wave in the late 1950s. Directors like Jean-Luc Godard and François Truffaut consciously utilized these conditions for cost-effective exterior shots without elaborate lighting setups. With the introduction of more sensitive film emulsions in the 1970s, cloudy bright light became the preferred choice for naturalistic storytelling. Digital technology from the 2000s onwards expanded possibilities through improved low-light performance and flexible color temperature post-processing.
Practical Application in Film
Terrence Malick systematically uses cloudy bright situations for the dreamlike atmosphere in "Days of Heaven" (1978) and "The Tree of Life" (2011). The Dogme 95 movement around Lars von Trier made these lighting conditions an aesthetic program for authentic storytelling. Particularly effective for portrait shots, as the soft illumination conceals skin imperfections and ensures even exposure of faces. Problematic for action scenes, as the flat illumination reduces spatial depth and makes dynamic movements appear less plastic.
Comparison & Alternatives
Unlike "overcast" with less than 1000 lux, cloudy bright offers sufficient light for standard camera settings. In contrast to "partly cloudy," the lighting conditions remain constant, avoiding continuity issues. LED panels with softboxes simulate this lighting mood in the studio but rarely achieve natural uniformity. Modern HMI balloons come close to the original but require significant technical effort and power supply.
