Compact 6000

High-output 6000W HMI unit used to replicate sunlight on exterior shoots or illuminate large interior spaces.

Technical Details

The system consists of the lamp head with continuously adjustable Fresnel optics (10° to 60° beam angle) and a separate electronic ballast (EVG) weighing 72 kg. The HMI lamps have a lifespan of 750 hours and require a 5-minute cooldown period before restarting. The luminous flux is 480,000 lumens with an efficiency of 95 lumens per watt. Modern variants feature flicker-free electronic ballasts for high-speed shooting up to 1000 fps.

History & Development

ARRI introduced the first Compact 6000 in 1987 as an evolution of the proven 2500W and 4000W models. The development was a response to the increased demand for powerful yet portable daylight sources for exterior shots. In 1995, the flicker-free version with an electronic ballast followed, and in 2003, the True Blue variant with improved color rendering (CRI >90). Since 2018, LED panels with similar light output have complemented the portfolio, but the HMI-Compact remains the standard for extreme lighting situations.

Practical Use in Film

Roger Deakins used the Compact 6000 as a sunlight imitation through windows in "Blade Runner 2049" (2017), enhanced by 12x12 diffusion. For daylight exteriors, the fixture serves as fill light or for illuminating shadow areas in portraits. Its high output allows for indirect lighting via large bounces or through heavy diffusion. Disadvantage: Noise from the cooling fans (45 dB) and heat generation require sufficient distance from actors and heat-sensitive equipment.

Comparison & Alternatives

Compared to the 12K or 18K HMI, the Compact 6000 offers better mobility with sufficient power for 80% of all applications. LED panels like the SkyPanel S360 achieve similar light levels with lower power consumption and stepless dimming, but cost three times as much. Tungsten fixtures with comparable wattage (10K) produce only 20% of the light output and an unsuitable color temperature for daylight mixing. The ARRI M90 has been gradually replacing the Compact 6000 with modern LED technology since 2019.
