Continuity System

Documentation of location, costume, actor positions across takes — prevents jump cuts and logic holes. Script supervisor's core job.

Anyone who has worked on set knows this: In the first take, the actor holds the cup in their right hand, in the second, in their left. The lamp is suddenly half a meter further to the left. Such breaks destroy scenes in the edit — this is where the continuity system comes in. It's not sexy, but it's the backbone of any professional production. The script supervisor meticulously documents every state: costume, prop placement, gaze direction, body positions at the table, lighting situation. These notes become the definitive template for every follow-up take — whether an hour later or two weeks after a shooting break.

The practice is unglamorous yet crucial. While the camera is rolling, the script supervisor sketches in her notebook: Where is the actor sitting? Which hand is holding the glass? Is the book lying open or closed? How far is the chair pulled in? For dialogue scenes, every word-for-word timing is noted so that reshot reactions match. With modern tools, digital position plans and stills taken immediately after the take are also used — Polaroids were yesterday, today it's iPad screenshots. These images show the exact state for the next setup.

The continuity system not only prevents jump cuts — visual leaps that irritate the viewer — but also more subtle errors: a character who suddenly changes their complexion due to different lighting, or drinks that magically become empty or full between shots. For multi-day shooting blocks for a single scene, this system is vital for survival. I've seen productions that had to invest days in post-production and digital fixes due to a lack of continuity documentation — pure waste of money.

Interestingly, the continuity system can also be used creatively: Deliberate continuity breaks can enhance montage effects or create absurd comedy. But this only works if you know beforehand what is supposed to be continuous. The script supervisor here is not a rule enforcer, but a partner to the director — she documents so that the director can later decide: continuity or deliberate break?
