Contrast

Difference between the brightest and darkest parts of an image, essential for visual impact and mood.

Definition

Contrast describes the ratio between the brightest and darkest areas of an image. High contrast creates dramatic looks with deep shadows and bright highlights, while low contrast appears softer and flatter.

Practical Application

Film Noir uses extreme contrast for drama. Comedies and Romantic Comedies often employ lower contrast for a friendlier image. The cinematographer controls contrast through lighting setup, and the colorist adjusts it in post-production.

Technical Details

Contrast ratio is measured in f-stops or as a ratio (e.g., 1000:1). S-curves in color grading increase contrast in the midtones while compressing the extremes. Log footage is intentionally shot with low contrast for maximum dynamic range.
