Core SWX is a US manufacturer of camera battery systems and power solutions, known for V-Mount and Gold-Mount batteries.

Technical Details

Core SWX batteries primarily use 14.4V lithium-ion cells with capacities ranging from 98Wh to 293Wh. The Helix series utilizes Twist-Lock connections with automatic locking, while the NEO batteries feature SmartTap technology for simultaneous 14.4V and USB output. The PowerBase-EDGE models offer up to 147Wh at only 1.1kg weight and feature LED status indicators with a 4-step capacity display. All batteries have integrated overvoltage and deep discharge protection circuits, as well as temperature monitoring within a -20°C to +50°C operating range.

History & Development

Core SWX was founded in Los Angeles in 2005 and initially established itself as a specialist in broadcast-ready V-Mount batteries. In 2012, the company introduced the first generation of Helix batteries with improved cell chemistry. The breakthrough came in 2016 with the NEO series, which first offered SmartTap functionality in a compact design. In 2019, Core SWX expanded into high-capacity batteries for digital cinema cameras like ARRI ALEXA and RED with the Fleet series.

Practical Application in Film

DoPs appreciate Core SWX batteries for their consistent voltage output even under high power draw from 4K/6K cameras. The Helix series was used in productions like "The Batman" (2022), where the quick swap times provided by the Twist-Lock mechanism were crucial. For Steadicam work, operators prefer the lightweight PowerBase-EDGE models, as every gram saved extends working time. The integrated USB outputs of the NEO series simultaneously power monitors and wireless transmitters without additional cabling.

Comparison & Alternatives

Core SWX primarily competes with Anton Bauer and IDX in the premium segment. While Anton Bauer focuses on digital interfaces (Intelligent Battery System), Core SWX emphasizes mechanical robustness and weight optimization. IDX batteries sometimes offer higher capacities but do not achieve the cycle life of Core SWX products (up to 1000 charge cycles). For budget productions, Swit or Watson represent more affordable alternatives, albeit with compromises in lifespan and safety standards.
