Crowd Simulation

Murnau AI illustration
cloth simulation particle system fluid simulation

VFX technique using AI agents to create realistic large-scale crowd movements and behaviors.

Definition

Crowd Simulation creates virtual crowds through AI-driven agents that react individually but collectively generate realistic mass movements. Each agent has its own behavioral rules, goals, and reactions to the environment.

Practical Application

Indispensable for battle scenes ("Lord of the Rings", "Game of Thrones"), stadiums, concerts, or historical scenes with thousands of people. Golaem, Massive, and Miarmy are specialized software solutions.

Technical Details

Agent-based systems define behavior (walking, running, fighting), collision avoidance, and goal-seeking. Motion capture provides the movement data. Level of Detail (LOD) systems optimize performance for distant characters.
