Olivia de Havilland was already a star in 1943—and trapped in a contract that gave her studio the right to simply extend her employment for additional years without her consent. She refused to make another film, sued, and won before the California Court of Appeal. The 1944 ruling established: Studios may extend contracts for a maximum of seven years; after that, it's over—anyone who doesn't re-sign is free. This was not just a victory for an actress. It was a crack in Hollywood's power architecture.

In practice, the system had previously worked like this: A studio would tie an actor to a contract for, say, three years. Then, shortly before expiration, it would automatically extend it for another three years. And again. And again. The contract became indentured servitude—the artist earned what the studio paid, couldn't switch to competitors, and couldn't refuse the roles they were given. The studios controlled not only who played what, but also for how long. De Havilland broke through this. After seven years—no matter how many times the option was exercised—the contract was definitively over. Period.

What followed: Artists could suddenly exert pressure. They could negotiate because they had an exit deadline. Agents became more important. The individual star—no longer totally dependent on the studio—could move into better positions, demand higher salaries, or even produce their own work. The major studio factories lost absolute control over their labor force. The change wasn't immediate—but the De Havilland Law was the lever.

Today, in the streaming age, similar mechanisms hide in modern contracts—options, exclusive services, unlimited exploitation rights. Anyone who writes or signs contracts should know this line: When is it over? When does it become forced labor instead of collaboration? The architecture that de Havilland fought for still sits in every reasonable entertainment contract. It's about the boundary between obligation and freedom.
