Compositing technique that generates a matte by comparing a clean background plate to footage containing subjects – calculates pixel-by-pixel differences to automatically isolate moving elements, commonly used for static camera shots with controlled backgrounds.

What is a Difference Matte?

A Difference Matte is a compositing technique where a matte is automatically generated by comparing two images – one of an empty background (clean plate) and the same image with foreground elements.
