When shooting at f/16 or smaller apertures, you quickly notice: while the depth of field increases, the image quality suffers unexpectedly. This is diffraction—a physical phenomenon you can't ignore, especially with modern high-resolution sensors. Light waves bend at the edges of the aperture instead of passing straight through. This creates interference patterns, color fringing, and a diffuse blur that should not be confused with focus errors. At 4K and higher, the problem becomes clearly visible—the pixels are so small that even minimal diffraction effects have an impact.

On set, you often encounter this during long takes requiring significant depth of field: landscapes, interiors, documentary scenes where you need maximum sharpness. You stop down to f/22, hoping for everything to be in focus—and then notice in the edit: a mushy, muddy quality everywhere, especially in the highlights and fine details. This isn't underexposed sensor noise; it's actual diffraction. With modern RAW workflows, this can only be corrected to a limited extent—some cameras have internal diffraction correction in their software, but it's often too aggressive.

Practical Countermeasures: Work with the so-called hyperfocal distance—calculate the optimal focus point (usually between 1/3 and 1/2 of the distance to the far object) and use f/8 to f/11 instead of extreme stops. With modern lenses and sensors, you often don't need to stop down that far. If you must stop down further, shoot multiple frames with different focus planes and combine them in post-production—this is called focus stacking. With green screens, where maximum separation sharpness is critical, diffraction becomes a real problem: it's better to use two light waves with different focus points than one diffracted wave.

The best DPs today choose their aperture values not by rules of thumb, but by sensor and desired image aesthetic. Diffraction is no longer a secret—it's a known compromise between depth of field and optical clarity. With the right focus strategy, you can resolve this conflict.
