Graduate thesis film at film school — funded final project mentored by established directors. Often a newcomer's first distribution-ready work.

The diploma project is created at the film school — the final thesis that declares a student from learner to professional filmmaker. The special aspect: While experimentation is still permitted at university, Dipo Film productions already operate under conditions similar to everyday production. The budget is limited, but available. Mentors from the industry accompany the work. The result must not only be artistically convincing but also technically and narratively on a level that proves successful in distribution later on.

The films are usually made in collaboration with established filmmakers — as producers, dramaturgical consultants, or professionals working in post-production who review the project and provide feedback. This creates a hybrid situation: the student bears responsibility but can still draw on experience. In practice, this means learning how to pitch a synopsis, how to juggle shooting permits, how to cast actors, and how to secure locations — all on a smaller, but real budget. Editing often takes place in professional post-production houses, no longer in the university suite.

For emerging directors, the Dipo Film is their first distributable work. They can submit it to festivals, pitch it at markets, and attract agents' attention with it. Many successful German-speaking filmmakers have realized their first short films or feature film pilots as diploma projects — it is often here that the network of cinematographers, editors, and sound designers is formed, which later collaborates for years. The Dipo Film is therefore not just a conclusion, but a starting point for a professional career in filmmaking.

The mix of artistic ambition and commercial marketability is also typical: the schools encourage innovative subjects and visual language, but at the same time expect the project to be viable in the market. This makes the Dipo Film a laboratory where academic perfectionism meets production reality.
