DMG MINI Switch is a technique of professional lighting design.

Technical Details

The DMG MINI Switch operates with a 12-24V DC input voltage and features 8 individually switchable relay outputs, each with a maximum load capacity of 10A. The DMX inputs are galvanically isolated, and addressing is done via DIP switches in the range of 1-512. The device supports 3-pin and 5-pin XLR connections and offers DMX-Thru for daisy-chaining multiple units. Status LEDs indicate DMX signal, channel activity, and operational status. The housing is IP54 rated for outdoor use.

History & Development

The first generation of digital mini-switches appeared in 2003 as a response to the increasing digitalization of film lighting and the need for decentralized lighting control. Manufacturers like Creative Light & Sound developed compact DMX switching solutions for the growing LED technology in the film industry. From 2008 onwards, standardized mini-switch formats became established, refined in 2012 with improved microcontrollers and more robust relay technology. Modern variants since 2018 additionally integrate Art-Net/sACN protocols for network-based control.

Practical Application in Film

In feature film productions such as "Blade Runner 2049" (2017), mini-switches enabled precise synchronization of practical lights with camera movement through direct DMX control. Typical workflows include decentralized mounting on trusses or set elements, with cabling to the central lighting control. The compact design allows integration into tight shooting situations, such as interior vehicle shots or concealed mounting in props. Disadvantages include the limited number of channels and the additional cabling effort compared to wireless systems.

Comparison & Alternatives

Compared to larger DMX dimmer packs, the mini-switch offers pure switching functions without dimming, making it exclusively suitable for on/off control. Wireless DMX systems like Lumen Radio are increasingly replacing wired mini-switches in mobile productions. Art-Net controllers enable network integration but require IT infrastructure on set. Mini-switches remain the first choice for reliable point-to-point cabling and when radio interference must be avoided.
