DMG SL1 Switch: Enhanced version of the DMG SL1 with switchable color temperatures between daylight and tungsten.

Technical Details

The device operates with an internal lithium-ion battery (3.7V, 2200mAh) and achieves an operating time of up to 12 hours with continuous use. The SL1 Switch can control up to 16 different lights or light groups via separate channels and supports all common DMX parameters such as intensity, color temperature (2800K-6500K for Bi-Color LEDs), Hue/Saturation for RGB systems, and Effects parameters. Wireless transmission is encrypted via DMG's proprietary CRMX protocol, which ensures latency-free signal transmission of under 5 milliseconds.

History & Development

DMG Lumière introduced the SL1 Switch in 2018 as a supplement to their SL1 LED panel series, following requests from cinematographers and gaffers for a more intuitive alternative to traditional DMX consoles. The Belgian company, founded in 2010 by CEO Bert Van Daele, responded to the trend towards wireless lighting control on set. In 2020, DMG expanded the system with the SL1 Mix software, enabling app-based control via tablet. The current firmware version 2.1 has also supported pixel mapping for LED strips since 2022.

Practical Application in Film

On "1917" (2019), cinematographer Roger Deakins used the SL1 Switch for precise control of hidden LED panels in the trenches to simulate natural light changes during the one-shot sequences. The controller allows for live adjustments during shooting without a gaffer needing to physically go to the light – particularly valuable for Steadicam shots or in confined locations. The intuitive operation via the encoder allows for stepless dimming and real-time color temperature shifts, eliminating the need for complex post-production corrections.

Comparison & Alternatives

Unlike traditional DMX boards like the ETC Ion series, the SL1 Switch focuses on individual light control rather than complex lighting shows. Competing systems such as the Astera ART7 Remote or the Quasar Q-Control offer similar functionalities but do not achieve the range and battery performance of the DMG system. While apps like CRMX Toolbox are more universally applicable, the SL1 Switch scores points with its tactile operation without touchscreen reflections on set.
