Dracast LED500: Bi-color LED panel with 500 LEDs — variable Color Temperature from 3200K to 5600K, CRI above 95.

Technical Details

The LED500 measures 480 × 280 × 65 mm with a weight of 3.2 kg and features 1008 individual SMD LEDs (504 Daylight 5600K, 504 Tungsten 3200K). Color rendering achieves a CRI value of >95 and a TLCI value of >98. The unit operates with an input voltage of 100-240V AC or 14.4V DC and offers V-Mount and Gold Mount battery plates. Light control is handled via DMX512, wireless 2.4GHz remote control, or manual controls on the unit. An integrated LCD display shows intensity, color temperature, and operating hours.

History & Development

Dracast introduced the LED500 series in 2016 in response to the growing demand for powerful, portable LED lights. The California-based company developed the unit specifically for the transition from halogen to LED technology in smaller productions. In 2018, the LED500 Pro version followed with improved cooling and expanded control options. In 2020, Dracast added the LED500 Silq to the series with optimized color mixing and reduced dimensions.

Practical Use in Film

The LED500 is suitable as a key light for interview setups and smaller studio productions. In the Netflix series "The Crown" (Season 4, 2020), DoP Adriano Goldman used LED500 units for lighting interiors in Windsor Castle replicas. Its low weight allows for use on booms and C-stands without additional counterweights. The variable color temperature allows for quick adjustments between daylight and artificial light scenes without changing gels. Criticisms include limited light output for larger sets and potential color shifts at extreme dimming levels below 10%.

Comparison & Alternatives

Compared to the Arri SkyPanel S30-C, the LED500 offers a more affordable alternative with comparable light output but lacks advanced color mixing and effect programs. The Aputure LS 300d II achieves similar brightness but is limited to daylight balance. Direct competitors include the Litepanels Gemini 2×1 and the Quasar Science Q-LED. The LED500 combines professional features with a mid-range price point, while high-end productions tend to opt for Arri or Kino Flo.
