Duck Bill Clamp is a flat, wide grip clamp designed for delicate surfaces, distributing pressure evenly to prevent scratches or marks.

Technical Details

Standard duck bill clamps support loads up to 2kg with a maximum clamping force of 150N. The jaws are made of hardened steel with rubberized or grooved surfaces for better grip. A 1/4"-20 or 3/8"-16 thread accepts ball heads or baby pins. Variants include extra-small models (clamping range 3-15mm) for paperwork and heavy-duty versions (up to 5kg load capacity) with reinforced springs. Special versions feature 360° ball joints or integrated cold shoes.

History & Development

Matthews Studio Equipment introduced the first commercial duck bill clamp in 1967 as the "Platypus Clamp," developed for increasingly mobile television production. Cardellini Clamps established a more compact design with optimized spring geometry in 1982 with the C-1. The introduction of LED panels from 2008 onwards significantly expanded their application range, as lighter fixtures opened up new mounting possibilities. Modern carbon fiber variants have been reducing their own weight by 40% since 2018.

Practical Application in Film

In "Blade Runner 2049" (2017), DoP Roger Deakins used duck bill clamps for discreet LED strips on vehicle sun visors for facial illumination. Typical applications include attaching Dedolights to door frames, furniture edges, or laptop displays for keyboard light effects. The flat design allows for unobtrusive placement in tight spaces or during 360° camera movements. Disadvantages become apparent in vibration-intensive shots, as clamping force can decrease on smooth surfaces.

Comparison & Alternatives

Unlike standard C-clamps, the duck bill shape offers better grip on thin materials such as book pages or fabric edges. Mafer clamps achieve higher load capacities (up to 15kg) but are bulkier. Super clamps (grip heads) are suitable for heavier lights from 5kg upwards. Modern magnetic mounts are increasingly replacing mechanical clamps on metallic surfaces, but offer only limited holding power. The choice depends on the substrate material, available space, and fixture weight.
