Conversion of photo lenses to cine lenses by Duclos Lenses, featuring unified focus and iris rings with metric scales.

Technical Details

The Cine-Mod process involves the installation of focus gears compatible with 15mm steel rods, recalibration of aperture rings to T-stop markings (instead of F-stops), and the installation of 114mm front rings for matte box systems. Duclos primarily modifies Canon EF, Nikon F, and Sony E-mount lenses, often reducing the minimum focus distance by 10-20%. The modified lenses achieve focus repeatability of ±0.02 mm and retain their electronic functions through specially developed interface boards.

The conversion is performed in three stages: Basic Cine-Mod (Gears and front ring), Standard Cine-Mod (additional T-stop calibration), and Full Cine-Mod (complete mechanical overhaul with damping system). The turnaround time is 3-6 weeks depending on the lens type.

History & Development

Matthew Duclos founded Duclos Lenses in 2010 after recognizing the lack of affordable cine lenses as a camera assistant. The first Cine-Mods were created in 2011 on Canon 5D Mark II lenses for DSLR video shooting. In 2013, the company established itself as a primary supplier for Netflix original productions, followed by collaborations with RED and ARRI in 2016 for official lens recommendations.

The development of special RED Komodo and Sony FX modifications starting in 2020 expanded the portfolio to over 200 different lens models. Duclos introduced AI-assisted quality control in 2022, reducing optical deviations to under 0.1%.

Practical Application in Film

Duclos Cine-Mods are used in productions such as "The Mandalorian" (Canon 85mm f/1.2 Cine-Mod), "Euphoria" (Sigma Art series), and "1917" (specially modified Zeiss Otus lenses). The lenses are particularly suitable for run-and-gun shooting as they remain significantly lighter than traditional cine lenses – a Canon 24-70mm f/2.8 Cine-Mod weighs 1,400g compared to 3,200g for a comparable cine zoom.

Typical applications are found in mid-budget streaming productions, independent films, and commercial productions. The modified lenses function seamlessly with follow focus systems from Teradek, Tilta, and SmallRig.

Comparison & Alternatives

Unlike manufacturers such as Sigma (Cine-Lenses ex-factory) or Zeiss (CP.3 series), Duclos offers retrofit solutions for existing still photography lenses. The cost is $800-1,500 USD per lens versus $4,000-8,000 USD for new cine lenses. Alternatives include Wooden Camera Zip-Gears (temporary solution) or Hot Rod Cameras (similar modification service). However, Duclos modifications offer more precise mechanical tolerances and more comprehensive service.
