US-based LED manufacturer specializing in compact, high-output fixtures with precise color rendering for professional film and photo applications.

Technical Details

Fiilex lights are based on a proprietary Dense Matrix LED technology that concentrates up to 144 individual LEDs on an area of 7.6 x 7.6 cm. The flagship models P360 Pro and P360 EX achieve light outputs of 21,600 and 28,800 lux respectively at a distance of one meter. Power is supplied either via V-Mount/Gold Mount batteries or a power supply unit with 90-240V. All models feature DMX-512 control and can be remotely controlled via smartphone apps. The anodized aluminum housings weigh between 1.1 kg (P180E) and 2.3 kg (P360 Pro).

History & Development

Fiilex was founded in 2010 by Brent Pennington in Los Angeles, after he experienced the limitations of conventional tungsten and HMI lights as a gaffer. The first model, P180, was launched in 2011 and established the concept of compact, battery-powered LED panels with variable color temperature. In 2014, the P360 series followed with significantly increased light output. In 2018, Fiilex expanded its portfolio with the Q-series, featuring square 30x30cm panels for area lighting.

Practical Application in Film

Fiilex lights are particularly suitable for run-and-gun productions, documentaries, and tight shooting situations. Their compact dimensions allow for mounting on camera rigs, in vehicles, or in hard-to-reach positions. Cinematographer Roger Deakins used P360 lights for special accent lighting in "Blade Runner 2049." Netflix productions frequently use Fiilex arrays for consistent facial illumination in interviews. The stepless color temperature control eliminates the need for conversion filters when switching between daylight and artificial light scenarios.

Comparison & Alternatives

Compared to ARRI SkyPanels, Fiilex lights offer greater portability with lower absolute light output. In comparison to Litepanels Astra, Fiilex excels with more accurate color reproduction and more robust housings. Modern alternatives include the ARRI Orbiter (higher output, larger accessory system) and Aputure Nova P300c (larger light surface, similar portability). For maximum mobility, Fiilex devices remain unrivaled, while studio work requires more powerful systems.
