On set, you need reliable references when your focus puller has to pull focus — especially with moving subjects. The focus point precisely marks those positions in space that the camera needs to focus on. It's not the DoP's fantasy, but a concrete instruction for the 1st AC, so they don't have to guess.
In practice, it looks like this: Your actor walks from A to B, the camera pans along. The focus puller now needs cut points — measurable locations where they pull focus. You therefore stick white paper strips, red gaffer tape, or chalk marks on the floor, on props, even on the wall. Each mark corresponds to a planned focus position. The 1st AC measures the distance from the camera to the mark with a steel ruler, notes the distance, and then pulls focus according to this plan during the take — blind, without looking at the monitor (although modern wireless follow-focus systems make this easier). The marks are thus your shared blueprint between the camera and the movement.
Common mistake: setting too few focus points. If your actor walks eight meters, three or four strategically placed marks are not enough — you need dense intermediate points so that the focus pull remains continuous. Even more important: ALWAYS set marks together with your focus puller. They should see where they need to aim, and you ask them if the density is sufficient. With Steadicam or slider moves, the complexity multiplies — here, even more precise reference points are needed, often supplemented by wireless follow-focus data.
Another point: focus points must be visible, but not intrude into the frame. White marks on dark surfaces, colored tape at the base of furniture, chalk lines behind scenery — placement is strategy. Some crews photograph the marked set before shooting so that the 1st AC still has the exact positions after several takes. This saves time and nerves when continuity counts.
