Four perforations per frame – this is the standard for most 35mm cameras. Four-Perf has defined cinematic image geometry since the 1920s, and to this day, 90 percent of all filmed content adheres to this standard. The reason lies in practicality: the perforations – small sprocket holes on the film edges – engage with the transport sprockets. Four of them per frame provide sufficient grip for smooth transport and minimal image jitter, without wasting raw film like the Eight-Perf format. The image area itself measures 21.95 × 16.04 mm – an aspect ratio that is flexibly cropped with various masks to Academy 1.37:1 or modern 1.85:1.
On set, you notice Four-Perf primarily during magazine handling. A 400-foot roll runs between 10 and 15 minutes, depending on the film speed – short enough that you're constantly changing it, but long enough to shoot scenes in one go. This makes it the standard for documentary and dramatic cinema alike. The lenses are fully optimized for it; every classic prime sits on a Four-Perf gate. In editing, the format plays hardly any role – it's simply there, invisible, the medium.
The advantage lies in the happy medium: more image area than 16mm, significantly less raw stock wear than VistaVision or the questionable Ektachrome system. Four-Perf also allows for clean overlay of optical effects, which are digitally reconstructed in later generations. Those who still shoot on film today – and reputable productions continue to do so – practically automatically opt for 35mm Four-Perf. Not out of nostalgia, but because the combination of image quality, cost-effectiveness, and established technical infrastructure is unrivaled.
A note on distinction: Three-Perf (formerly exotic, now marginally relevant again in the digital age) saves raw stock but costs image stability. VistaVision offers a larger area for high-end productions – shooting Four-Perf is a conscious decision for the standard, not the premium format.
