Professional-grade MōVI gimbal supporting cameras up to 6.8kg, featuring extended battery life and enhanced motor precision control.

Technical Details

The MōVI Pro weighs 2.72 kg and measures 254 × 330 × 203 mm when folded. Three brushless gimbal motors stabilize the roll, pitch, and yaw axes with a maximum torque of 40 Nm. Power is supplied by RED Brick batteries or V-Mount batteries at 22.2-28V. The system supports wireless remote control via MIMIC controllers within a radius of 300 meters at 2.4 GHz. Calibration is performed using the MōVI Controller App, which provides presets for common camera-lens combinations.

History & Development

Freefly Systems introduced the first MōVI M10 in 2013, revolutionizing the Steadicam-dominated stabilization industry. The MōVI Pro appeared in 2017 as an evolution with improved motor performance and more precise sensor technology. Vincent Laforet demonstrated the cinematic possibilities of the original MōVI system in 2013 with his short film "Möbius." Freefly continuously developed the system, integrating MIMIC technology in 2018 for intuitive remote control.

Practical Application in Film

The MōVI Pro enables complex camera movements such as orbit shots, reveals, and seamless transitions between static and moving shots. Cinematographers use it for car-to-car shots, low-mode shots, and precise product placement in commercials. The MAJESTIC mode allows for extreme slow-motion movements, while the ECHO mode records and repeats camera movements. Typical workflows include remote heads for cranes, handheld operations, and use on cable systems.

Comparison & Alternatives

The MōVI Pro competes with the DJI Ronin 2 (4.5 kg payload) and Steadicam systems like the Ultra2. While Steadicams use mechanical stabilization through inertia, the MōVI Pro operates actively via motors. The subsequent MōVI Carbon (2019) reduced the weight to 1.8 kg with the same payload capacity. For smaller cameras up to 2.3 kg, the MōVI M5 is suitable, and for RED setups over 6.8 kg, the MōVI XL with an 18 kg payload capacity is appropriate.
