Relief fund for German filmmakers in hardship — welfare system for freelance crews and artists. Funded by industry contributions and donations.

In the film industry, the vast majority work on a project basis — cinematographers, gaffers, editors, sound mixers move between productions, have breaks between shoots, and suddenly lose a committed production. This is exactly where the German Film Artists Emergency Aid comes in. It is not just a charity organization, but a functioning network that supports filmmakers when illness, accident, or economic hardship occurs — situations where regular social insurance or unemployment benefits do not apply or are insufficient.

The foundation is financed through industry contributions — production companies, broadcasters, and streaming platforms pay in continuously — as well as through targeted fundraising. You often don't notice it on set, but if a camera assistant is out for three months after a fall, or an editor gets into financial difficulties between two major projects, they can turn to it. The aid is unbureaucratic: application procedures exist, but without months of waiting times. The foundation understands industry mechanics and knows that a freelance gaffer cannot simply say employment agency.

Practically, this means: emergency grants for living expenses, bridging loans for longer periods of absence, and in some cases, further training support if someone needs to reorient after an injury. Most crews hardly know it exists — until they or a colleague needs it. In contrast to insurance models like disability insurance, the foundation works on a solidarity basis: those who are currently earning well contribute; those in crisis are supported.

The institution is also a political statement — a commitment from the industry that filmmakers must not simply fall into precariousness. It is an anchor for everyone who knows that no shoot is secure and no income is guaranteed.
