Trade association representing German film distributors — governs theatrical releases, clearances, and market practices. Your contact for distribution logistics and scheduling.
Need a theatrical release? The VdF is the interface you need to understand. The German Film Distributors Association bundles Germany's major and medium-sized distribution companies—from Universal and Warner to independent distributors—and sets the rules of engagement between production, distribution, and exhibition. This isn't just any lobbying group: the VdF establishes de facto standards for clearances, release dates, and the coordination of theatrical runs.
In practice, this means: if you want to bring your film to cinemas, your distributor negotiates with cinemas about screen allocation and minimum run times. The VdF has standardized these processes through regulations—topics such as the so-called clearance rule (how long before a TV broadcast a film must still be shown in cinemas) or release planning (when several major films are allowed to premiere without cannibalizing each other). This sounds bureaucratic, but without this coordination, every distributor would push for the same ten release dates, and the market would collapse.
You rarely notice this directly on set. But in post-production and distribution, it becomes relevant: your line producer communicates with the distributor, and the distributor coordinates with other major releases through VdF channels. Even with international co-productions, the VdF's standards play a role—German distribution partners orient themselves according to these specifications. The VdF's membership structure also indirectly determines which films receive good distribution backing: smaller independent productions often work with smaller VdF members or even outside the association.
Important: The VdF is not the film funding body (that's a completely different structure) nor the cinema association (that's a separate organization). The VdF regulates the commercial distribution side. When negotiating a distribution partnership for your production, your managing director or producer should at least know that the partner's VdF status is relevant—it signals that this distributor participates in the organized market and adheres to standards.
