Historic German camera manufacturer — produced Arriflex and cinema cameras. Standard equipment across European and German-language productions through the 1980s–90s.

For a long time, Geyer Works was the backbone of camera infrastructure in German-speaking countries. Founded in Munich, they not only built cameras but also distributed and, above all, serviced the Arriflex series – with a precision and reliability that any DoP could count on. Anyone on a German or Austrian set between the 1960s and 1980s most likely worked with equipment from Geyer's inventory.

What was special was less their own production and more the customization and technical service. Geyer modified cameras for specific requirements – adapted matte box systems, tailor-made magazine solutions, conversions for different film formats. Their workshops were legendary for the speed with which they solved problems on set. A defective viewfinder? A worn-out gear? Geyer had a replacement or built one overnight. That was the true value: not the invention, but the reliable partnership between manufacturer and cameraman.

Anyone working with Arriflex – be it the 16SR, the BL, or the IIC – couldn't avoid Geyer's customer service. Camera rental houses in Munich, Berlin, and Vienna sourced from them. Small productions rented directly from Geyer, while large studios had Geyer as their preferred maintenance partner. This created a kind of technical ecosystem: the cameras were perfectly tailored to European requirements because Geyer knew every request.

With the digital revolution and the decline of the classic film business, Geyer Works disappeared from daily operations – a logical but painful consequence. Today, their cameras are collector's items and testaments to an era when craftsmanship and customer proximity were still the basis of all technical infrastructure. Anyone working with historical 16mm or 35mm cameras today regularly encounters Geyer modifications – a silent legacy of precision.
