Clear viscous liquid for sweat, tears, or skin moisture on camera. Slower drying than water, holds shine under lights, stays put during takes.
On set, you'll need glycerin when sweat, tears, or moisture need to look authentic — not as a mere special effect, but as a visual statement. This clear, viscous liquid adheres to the skin longer than water, dries more slowly, and creates a moist sheen under camera that immediately conveys stress, anxiety, or physical exertion. An actor with genuine glycerin sweat on their forehead looks more convincing than one who has just showered.
In practice, you'll usually mix glycerin with distilled water — the ratio depends on the desired effect. Pure glycerin can look too oily and unnatural; a 1:3 mixture (glycerin to water) creates realistic beads of sweat without exaggeration. For tears, use higher glycerin proportions, as the liquid will then cling to the face and not immediately run down the throat. With a fine spray bottle — don't be too generous — mist the mixture onto the forehead, cheeks, or neck shortly before the take. The advantage over real sweat: you have control over the amount, timing, and repeatability between takes.
Be aware that glycerin can appear too shiny in certain lighting situations — especially in close-ups or under harsh spotlights. A matte foundation or a light setting powder over the glycerin helps to subtly tone down the effect. For night scenes or dark lighting setups (see also: High-Key, Low-Key), the sheen often works better than in daylight-driven sequences. With camera movements — such as zooms or dolly shots — a glycerin effect can quickly appear artificial if the movement is too fast and the sheen flickers.
Common mistake: applying too much. Less is more — a thin, moist layer looks more realistic than being drenched. Placement also matters: sweat collects at the hairline, on the neck, between the ribs, and on the upper arms, not evenly distributed across the entire face. For multiple takes, you can keep the mixture in a small spray bottle; it will last for several days.
