LED fixture line by Godox with Bowens mount — affordable alternative to Arri and Dedolight.

Technical Details

The flagship SL-200W delivers 58,000 Lux at one meter with a standard reflector, achieving a color rendering of CRI 96+ and TLCI 97+. The fixture weighs 1.9 kg, measures 295 × 130 × 85 mm, and operates with a silent, fanless cooling system up to 50% power. All SL models use Bowens Mount connectors for light modifiers and offer stepless dimming from 10-100%. Power is supplied via either an AC adapter or V-Mount batteries, with the SL-200W providing approximately 45 minutes of runtime at full load with a 95Wh battery.

History & Development

Godox introduced the SL series in 2017 as a cost-effective alternative to established LED manufacturers like Arri or Litepanels. The Chinese manufacturer, originally specializing in photographic flashes, successfully expanded into the video market with this line. In 2019, the revised SL-II generation followed, featuring improved color consistency and app control. The series quickly established itself among independent filmmakers and smaller production companies as a "budget alternative" to high-priced products.

Practical Application in Film

The SL-200W is suitable for indoor portrait lighting and as fill light for interviews. With a softbox, soft illumination is achieved for talking heads, while use with a Fresnel attachment creates hard shadows for a Film Noir aesthetic. Documentary filmmakers appreciate the battery option for location-based shoots. However, the lower light output compared to HMI fixtures limits outdoor use in daylight – here, the units primarily function as fill light or for detail shots.

Comparison & Alternatives

Compared to Arri SkyPanel or Litepanels Gemini, the SL series offers significantly less light output but also 70-80% lower acquisition costs. In comparison to Aputure Light Storm models, Godox is in a similar price range but with fewer accessory options. Professional large productions still prefer Arri or Kino Flo due to higher color consistency between units. For corporate videos, music videos, and low-budget productions, the SL series offers 70-80% cost savings with sufficient light quality.
