Gold Board

Reflector with a gold-colored surface that bounces warm, golden light onto subjects, creating a sunny, flattering quality ideal for portraits and skin tones.

Technical Details

The surface is made of anodized aluminum with a gold alloy or gold-colored painted metal plates. The reflectivity is between 75-85%, with the spectral distribution reducing blue light and increasing red/yellow components. Professional Gold Boards use matte or textured surfaces to reduce scattered light. Foldable versions consist of stretched frames with polyester fabric in a gold look, while rigid versions are made of hollow chamber panels or honeycomb structures.

History & Development

The first Gold Boards originated in the 1940s in Hollywood as an evolution of silver reflectors. Cinematographer James Wong Howe experimented in 1947 on "Body and Soul" with gold-anodized reflectors for boxing scenes. In the 1960s, the technique was established by Sergio Leone's Westerns, where cinematographer Tonino Delli Colli used Gold Boards for the characteristic warm lighting. Modern versions have used lightweight materials and precise surface structures since the 1990s.

Practical Use in Film

In "Mad Max: Fury Road" (2015), cinematographer John Seale used large Gold Boards for the desert sequences to enhance natural sunlight and create warm skin tones. Typical applications include outdoor shots in sunlight, backlight shots, and portraits with a warm mood. Gold Boards function optimally at color temperatures between 3200K and 5600K. The distance to the subject determines the light intensity: at 2 meters distance, approximately 1 stop of additional illumination is achieved.

Comparison & Alternatives

In contrast to Silver Boards, Gold Boards produce significantly warmer light, while White Bounces provide softer, more neutral light. LED panels with variable color temperature are increasingly replacing traditional reflectors, but do not offer the natural light quality of reflected sunlight. Modern hybrid reflectors combine gold and silver segments for variable color temperatures. Gold Boards remain indispensable for authentic outdoor lighting without a power supply.
