Grip's right hand — carries kit, sets rigs, secures positions during camera moves. The department grinds to a halt without this guy.

The Groupman is the backbone of any grip department — nothing runs without them. They are not simply assistants who haul equipment, but trained technicians who keep the entire technical infrastructure of camera movement running. While the Grip performs the conceptual work and plans movement systems, the Groupman ensures that every pipe, every sandbag, and every safety line is positioned exactly where it needs to be — and that it doesn't shift during the shot.

On set, the Groupman's workday begins long before the first take. They set up the dolly tracks, assemble jibs and cranes, attach follow focus systems to the camera, and secure everything with weights and tension cables. When setting up a camera crane move, they must adjust the counterweight arm, check the lifting capacity, and attach safety cables in compliance with rigging standards. This is not routine — every position requires recalculation. A balancing point shifted by ten centimeters can make the entire move unstable. The Groupman must have an intuitive understanding of statics, weight distribution, and motion dynamics for this.

During the take itself, the Groupman is like a silent technician behind the scenes. For a Steadicam move, they must position the cables and the wireless monitor so that the operator can move freely. For dolly shots on tracks, they must walk along and anticipate potential obstacles — an overlooked cable or a sandbag on the track can ruin the entire take. They hoard spare equipment, observe the rigs during movement, and immediately report if something is wobbling or jamming suspiciously.

The best Groupmen think ahead like a DoP. They understand not only the pure mechanics but also how camera movements influence the image composition. If a Grip suggests a crane move through a tight set, the Groupman must immediately see if the rig fits, what buffers are needed, and where collisions are imminent. This saves hours of planning time. A solid Groupman is invaluable — and their absence is immediately noticeable.
