The Havas — a robust halogen lamp with a compact, reflector-coated housing — is one of the most reliable tools on any set when it comes to hard, precise light. The name comes from the manufacturer and has long since become a generic term, similar to Kleenex for tissues. The lamp uses high-frequency technology, meaning it operates flicker-free and delivers a stable color temperature of approximately 3200K — ideal for tungsten film or digital sensors with the appropriate white balance setting.
What distinguishes the Havas: It can be focused extremely precisely. The reflector and the adjustable lamp position allow you to control the beam from tightly focused to wide illumination — without additional diffusers or flag arrangements. This makes it the preferred instrument for key light in close-ups, for hard accentuation of contours, or for effect lighting. On some sets, you'll see three or four Havas lamps on different stands arranged around an actress, each focused on a different part of the face. The result is a level of control that would be impossible with large softboxes.
In practice, you need to consider: A Havas produces real heat. The halogen filaments get very hot, and in a small studio or during close-ups, the actor will notice this quickly. Ventilation is essential. Furthermore, the fixture requires a stable power setup — the HF ballasts are robust, but they don't like voltage fluctuations. When handling the lamp itself: Direct skin contact during operation leads to burns. Always wait until it has cooled down.
The classic Havas has faced competition from LED spotlights with similar focusability, which, however, generate less heat and are cheaper to operate. Nevertheless: for certain shots — especially when you need that stable, unadulterated halogen glow with its characteristic color depth — you still reach for the Havas. It is reliable, easy to operate, and delivers exactly the light you see.
