You place a haze filter in front of the lens when the atmosphere between you and the subject is working against you. Over long distances, the air absorbs contrast and color saturation, especially in the blue spectrum. The filter absorbs UV radiation and that fine haze that makes your landscape shot look flat and washed out. Unlike a strong ND filter, a haze filter doesn't degrade image quality—it restores the sharpness and contrast that distance has stolen from you.
On set, you distinguish between different strengths: The classic Haze 1 is almost invisible, subtle, good for slight atmospheric diffusion. The Haze 2A packs more punch—noticeable, but not dramatic. Stronger variants already interfere with color temperature and quickly become artificial. Most DoPs work with the 1 or 2A because they are reliable without making your image look like it has a filter on it. That's the whole secret: the filter should be invisible. It fixes a problem, it doesn't create one.
Practically, you mount it directly in front of the lens—like a standard protective filter, only this one actively contributes. For aerial shots and drone shots, the haze filter is almost indispensable because the altitude and air mass are simply greater. Also with extreme wide angles over landscapes, especially in sunny conditions, the filter brings back color saturation to the mid-tones. You see it immediately on the monitor: the sky becomes deeper, the distant view clearer, without the exposure collapsing or you slipping into strange color casts.
Caution: A haze filter is not a correction for incorrect white balance settings or underexposure. It is also not the same as a UV filter—the UV only protects the lens. The haze filter is an image element filter that specifically intervenes in the optical properties of the subject. And yes, with digital cameras, the UV component is less critical than on film, but the haze effect remains physically real: light particles in the air. You capture those with it.
