Storage format for VFX pipelines with extreme dynamic range — floating-point data per channel, no posterization in shadows. Industry standard for color grading and compositing.

You're working with extreme light values — overexposed windows next to deep shadows in the same shot — and you quickly realize: standard 8-bit formats like ProRes or DNxHD clip your data. This is where HDFS comes in. The format stores each color channel as a 32-bit floating-point value, not as an integer from 0–255. This means practically unlimited color depth and dynamic range — you can pull up the shadows without them looking stepped (posterization). This is essential in compositing and color grading because you're working with true physical light values, not quantized values.

On set, you immediately notice the difference in data handling. HDFS files are large — very large — but unlike uncompressed RAW sequences, they can be transported with moderate compression rates (e.g., via OpenEXR or native Unreal Engine formats) without losing quality. The advantage: you can work aggressively in color processing. A shot with extreme sunset backlight that you could never salvage in 8-bit? In HDFS floating-point, you can pull up the shadows by 3–4 stops, and there are no artifacts, no banding.

Practical Pipeline: RAW material is converted to HDFS via a DCI converter or debayer engine, then processed through the grading suite (DaVinci, Nuke), and finally encoded into the final output format (10-bit LogC or 12-bit ProRes, depending on requirements) for mastering and delivery. Important: HDFS is not the output format, but the intermediate working format. Some VFX supervisors insist that all compositing passes are saved in HDFS — this eliminates degradation between passes.

The risk lies in the storage and bandwidth trap. 4K HDFS sequences for a 100-shot sequence can quickly amount to several terabytes. You need redundant storage (RAID 5 minimum), fast network pipes, and a stable pipeline architecture. But if your project deals with extreme light value contrasts and you need to do high-demand color grading or VFX, this is the only standard that doesn't compromise.
