Interpretation loop: you understand single scene only through the whole film, the whole film only through its scenes — no fixed meaning, only constant re-weighting. No beginning, no end.
In editing, you quickly realize: a scene never means the same thing twice. You're sitting at the editing console, watching a confrontation between two characters – it seems aggressive, emotional, perhaps even comical. Then you place it in the context of the third act, and suddenly it's tragic. This isn't a flaw in your perception. This is the hermeneutic circle at work.
The principle works like this: you cannot understand a single scene in isolation. You need the information of the entire film – character development, themes, rhythm – to read it correctly. At the same time, you construct your interpretation of the overall film from these very scenes. There is no starting point, no fixed point where meaning resides. Instead, your interpretation constantly circulates: scene informs film, film informs scene back. This loop never ends because each new piece of information reweights the previous meaning.
In practical work on set or in editing, this means the following: an actor performs a gesture – a slight head movement, a glance to the side. During the shoot, it appears neutral, almost unreadable. In the rough cut, you notice: depending on how you cut it with the previous scene, what music you underscore it with, what images come before and after, this gesture becomes a confession, a lie, or resignation. You edit one version, watch it, and suddenly realize: the entire character constellation needs to be reweighted. So you go back, re-edit the first scene – and the later scene gains new meaning again. This process is not dysfunctional. It is the core of filmmaking.
This is why experienced editors often speak of the "emotional truth" of a cut, not the "one correct interpretation." The film only stabilizes when this circularity has settled – when the scenes mutually support each other and the viewer has a coherent experience. This doesn't mean all interpretations are equal. It means: meaning arises in the act of viewing, in this permanent feedback loop between part and whole. The best editing is often not the most elegant, but the one where this cycle runs most smoothly – where each piece of information prepares the next perception without interrupting the loop.
