In-Camera VFX

Murnau AI illustration
in camera effects practical effect in camera trick special effect

Visual effects captured during filming rather than added in post-production.

Definition

In-Camera VFX encompasses all visual effects created during the recording process: LED volumes, projections, physical effects, or camera-based tricks like forced perspective.

Practical Application

In addition to LED volumes, classic techniques are also included: rear projection, Schüfftan effect, miniature models in correct perspective. Directors like Nolan prefer in-camera for authenticity.

Technical Details

Advantages: Correct lighting, reflections, actor interaction, less post-production work. Disadvantages: Less flexibility, higher set costs. Hybrid approaches combine the best of both worlds.
