The first few seconds decide whether your audience stays or leaves. An intro doesn't function as a title sequence or credits — it's the deliberate composition of image, sound, and rhythm that pulls the viewer into the film's world. You work here with few, concise elements: a strong visual statement, sound design (or deliberate silence), and a dramaturgical announcement of what's to come. An effective intro rarely lasts longer than 60 seconds, because attention is a scarcer commodity than budget.
In editing practice, you distinguish between two types: the narrative intro, which immediately presents a story or conflict — a hand reaches for a weapon, the camera moves through ruins, a person sits alone in the dark — and the atmospheric intro, which prioritizes mood over action. With Hitchcock, for example: a long shot of a staircase, static camera, musical tension, only then the first action. This isn't boredom — it's control. The editing here is often slower, more deliberate, without haste. In action films or thriller series, however, your intro looks different: quick cuts, visual disruption, volume shocks. Drive begins with minimal dialogue and a neon drive; Trainspotting with screaming music and chaotic images. Both work by contrasting with normal perception.
Technically, the intro is your test for color grading, sound mix, and visual effects. If something doesn't work here — a color cast too aggressive, the dialogue too quiet, a VFX plate too obvious — the viewer sees it immediately. That's why you re-edit your intro multiple times, test it in a cinema or with different displays. Some editors work on the intro only at the end, when they know the entire film's tonality. That's smart: an intro without knowing the rest of the film can become a misinvestment.
The editing cadence of an intro also determines the pace of the entire film. A film with a slow, long intro will train viewers for patience. A fast, aggressive intro with many cuts conditions them for excitement. This isn't superficiality — it's dramaturgy. Your first shot is a promise.
