Continuous ambient or music bed played during shooting — establishes emotional tone on set. Usually stripped out or replaced by final score in post.

During filming, a kind of emotional background music is constantly playing — this is the IT Sound (Intelligent Theme). The director or the set sound mixer selects a music or ambient track that plays over loudspeakers on set. It runs through all takes, all scenes of a shooting day, sometimes even several shooting days. This has nothing to do with the final score. It is a tool to maintain the emotional temperature during the shoot.

The function is clear: actors perform differently when they act in silence than when subtle, melancholic music or a diffuse ambient pad surrounds them. The IT Sound helps them get into the right emotional state — without the music itself intruding into the recording later. The sound is recorded and filtered separately; the music remains invisible but influences the facial expressions, timing, and energy of the performance. An actor under a melancholic string arrangement will play slower, more introspectively than with no sound at all.

In practice, the IT Sound is organized by the sound department or production management. Often, the director brings a playlist — film score excerpts, classical compositions, or ambient pieces. Some directors swear by the same track for an entire shooting day; others change it every two hours. The loudspeakers are placed on set or nearby, the music plays at a low volume — loud enough to be effective, quiet enough not to overload the microphones.

What happens to it after shooting: Away with it. The IT Sound is not edited, not archived. It is pure shooting aid, comparable to a prop or lighting setup. In the edit, the editor works with clean takes without this track. The final score — composed or licensed — later replaces any emotional groundwork. The IT Sound leaves no trace in the film but shapes the quality of the recorded performances, and that is its entire purpose.
