Kinefinity is a Chinese manufacturer of digital cinema cameras featuring modular design with KineMount lens mount compatibility.
Technical Details
The current MAVO series offers 6K resolution at up to 100fps in 6144x3160 pixels and 4K at 150fps. The Super35 CMOS sensor delivers 15 stops of dynamic range and operates with native ISO values of 800/5120. The cameras record in KineRAW (2:1, 3:1, 5:1 compression) as well as ProRes 422/HQ. The modular Terra system weighs only 1.2 kg in its basic configuration and can be expanded up to 4 kg with additional modules. All cameras use a proprietary KineMOUNT with electronic contacts for lens control and metadata transfer.
History & Development
Kinefinity was founded in Beijing in 2011 by former RED engineers. The first KineRAW camera appeared in 2013 as direct competition to the RED Epic. In 2016, the Terra series followed with improved ergonomics and lower prices. The MAVO line from 2018 established the company internationally through better availability and distribution channels in Europe and America. In 2021, the MAVO Edge expanded the portfolio with a compact 8K variant for high-end productions.
Practical Use in Film
Kinefinity cameras are primarily used in independent productions and documentaries, where their favorable price-performance ratio is convincing. The Chinese market increasingly uses them for streaming content and advertising. The modular system is particularly suitable for handheld and gimbal work, as the weight distribution can be optimally adjusted. However, the KineRAW codecs require specialized post-production workflows and are not natively supported in all editing programs.
Comparison & Alternatives
Kinefinity positions itself between consumer DSLRs and high-end cinema cameras like ARRI Alexa or RED. The image quality reaches professional standards, while the prices are significantly lower than established manufacturers. The modular concept is similar to RED cameras, but with simpler handling and lower licensing fees. As an alternative to Blackmagic Design, Kinefinity offers higher resolutions and better dynamic range, but requires more technical know-how.
