Current Kodak film stock family for professional cinema production, available in 50D, 200T, 250D, and 500T emulsions.

Kodak Vision 3 is the current and likely final generation of professional cinema negative films from Kodak. The family includes four emulsions: 5203 (50D), 5213 (200T), 5207 (250D), and 5219 (500T). The letters stand for Daylight (D) and Tungsten (T) – the color temperature the film is balanced for.

The Four Emulsions

The 50D (5203) is the sharpest, finest-grained film – ideal for exterior shots in daylight. The 200T (5213) is the all-rounder for interior shots with artificial light. The 250D (5207) offers more sensitivity in daylight than the 50D, with slightly more grain. The 500T (5219) is the high-speed film for low-light situations – the grain is visible and appreciated by many DPs as an aesthetic element.

Why Film in 2026?

Despite digital dominance, productions like Oppenheimer, The Batman, or Poor Things shoot on film. The reasons: the grain is organic (not like a plugin), highlights roll off naturally instead of clipping harshly, and the color character is irreplicable. Added to this is the discipline on set: when each roll costs €500, everyone thinks twice about whether the take is truly necessary.

Cost and Logistics

A 400ft roll (approx. 4.5 minutes at 24fps) costs around €250-350. Add to this processing (€80-120 per roll) and scanning (€150-500 per roll, depending on resolution). A shooting day with 6 rolls amounts to approx. €3,000-4,000 for film and lab alone – excluding camera rental.
