US-based manufacturer of camera accessories and rig components, specializing in modular cage systems.

Technical Details

The product range includes cage systems, follow focus units, matte boxes, and shoulder rigs made from 6061-T6 aluminum with an anodized finish. Standard threads follow 1/4-20, 3/8-16, and M6 specifications, while rod systems use 15mm diameter with 60mm spacing. The modular cages weigh between 450g (BMPCC variant) and 2.8kg (Alexa system) and offer up to 24 threaded mounts for accessories. Follow focus units operate with 0.8 module gears and a 360° rotation range with a maximum torque of 2.5 Nm.

History & Development

Kondor Blue was founded in 2018 by cinematographer Marcus Richardson in Los Angeles, after existing support systems did not meet the demands of modern hybrid productions. In 2019, the first modular cage system for the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K was launched. In 2021, the company expanded its product line to include follow focus systems and matte boxes, followed by the integration of wireless-compatible modules for DJI RS gimbals in 2023.

Practical Application in Film

Kondor Blue equipment is used in Netflix series like "The Crown" (Season 5) and independent productions with RED Komodo and Sony FX6 cameras. The modular design allows for quick reconfiguration between handheld, gimbal, and tripod modes within two minutes. The cages offer direct access to camera ports without disassembly and support V-mount batteries up to 190Wh. Disadvantages appear at extreme temperatures below -10°C, where the aluminum components exhibit thermal expansion.

Comparison & Alternatives

Compared to SmallRig, Kondor Blue offers more precise manufacturing quality at 30% higher costs, while Tilta provides more robust carbon fiber solutions for heavy-duty applications. ARRI support systems remain the standard for high-end productions; Kondor Blue positions itself in the mid-budget segment between 200-1500 EUR per setup. Wooden Camera competes with similar modular concepts, but with a focus on American production standards rather than European compatibility.
