Lens mount alliance by Leica, Panasonic, and Sigma — 51.6mm diameter with short flange distance, supporting full-frame and APS-C sensors.

Technical Details

The L-Mount features a bayonet diameter of 51.6 mm with a flange focal distance of only 20 mm, allowing for significant design flexibility in lenses. Its eleven contacts transmit digital signals at a rate of up to 480 Mbit/s for fast autofocus communication. The system supports lenses with apertures as wide as f/0.95 and, thanks to its short flange focal distance, enables the adaptation of nearly all other lens systems via appropriate adapters. The bayonet mount is made of hardened stainless steel and is designed for over 100,000 lens changes.

History & Development

Leica introduced the L-Mount in 2014 with the Leica T (later renamed Leica TL), initially for APS-C sensors. In 2018, Leica expanded the system to full-frame with the Leica SL. In September 2018, Leica, Panasonic, and Sigma founded the L-Mount Alliance to jointly develop and market the system. Panasonic launched the Lumix S1 and S1R in 2019, followed by Sigma with the fp in 2019. This cooperation established the L-Mount as one of the few cross-manufacturer lens standards in photography.

Practical Use in Filmmaking

Panasonic Lumix S1H cameras with L-Mount have been used in productions like "The Mandalorian" (2019) for specific shots, offering 6K video recording in a compact design. The Sigma fp, due to its minimal dimensions (112.6 × 69.9 × 45.3 mm), is frequently employed for gimbal shots and in confined spaces. The short flange focal distance allows the use of vintage lenses with adapters, enabling cinematographers to imbue modern digital sensor technology with classic bokeh characteristics. The fast data transfer between native L-Mount lenses ensures precise autofocus even during 60p video recording.

Comparison & Alternatives

Compared to the Canon RF-Mount (54 mm diameter, 20 mm flange focal distance), the L-Mount has a slightly smaller diameter but an identical flange focal distance. The Sony E-Mount operates with a 46.1 mm diameter and an 18 mm flange focal distance, allowing L-Mount lenses to generally achieve larger maximum apertures. Its cross-manufacturer compatibility distinguishes the L-Mount from proprietary systems like Canon RF or Nikon Z. While Micro Four Thirds utilizes smaller sensors, the L-Mount directly competes with other full-frame systems, but through its Alliance partners, it offers the largest native lens selection outside the Sony E-Mount system.

News

Blackmagic has introduced Phase Detection Autofocus (PDAF) for the PYXIS 6K and Cinema Camera 6K with Beta Firmware 10.0.3 RC1. The update specifically supports L-Mount lenses with linear focus, significantly improving focus speed and stability. L-Mount lenses offer better performance than EF-Mount variants but require corresponding firmware updates for the lenses.
