Compositing multiple image layers in VFX pipeline—foreground, background, effects, corrections stacked. Core process for digital compositing and color correction.
On set, you think in layers—in editing and post-production, you live in them. The layering operation is the core of all modern digital image compositing: you stack footage, effects, color corrections, and mattes on top of each other, each layer with its own transparency, blend mode, and temporal control. What used to require optical printing machines is now done in software—and the workflow is identical: source material in, elements on top, effects in, done.
In practice, this means: you have your plate—the camera original. On top of that, you add CGI elements (Layer 1), then particle effects like smoke or water splashes (Layer 2), then lighting effects and glows (Layer 3), then your matte paintings or extended landscapes (Layer 4). Each gets its own mask, its own blend mode—Add, Screen, Multiply, whatever the scene requires. In parallel, color grade layers run over it, influencing the entire stack. This isn't linear; it's architectural. That's why it's also called compositing hierarchy—each layer influences the one below or above it, depending on the order.
The crucial point: layering operations are non-destructive. You never alter the original material. Instead, you pack corrections, effects, and color science into separate layers that you can readjust at any time—without having to rerun the entire render process. This is critically important in terms of time and cost when the director wants changes in the final week. You simply tweak a color correction layer, not the entire composition.
In grading, we use the same principle: primary grade (base), then secondary curves (windows/masks), then window grading, then effects overlay, then final mastering. Each layer is separate, reversible. This is also why modern NLE and VFX software thinks in layers—After Effects, Nuke, Fusion—this has become the industry's language. Professionals work with layering, not monolithic images.
