Minimal diffusion filter for subtle light softening with negligible light loss.

Definition

The Lee 251 is a 1/2 Minus Green filter from the Lee Filters series. The polycarbonate filter reduces the green component of fluorescent lights by half a stop, aligning their color temperature with Tungsten light.

Practical Application

The filter corrects mixed lighting situations:

  • Color Correction: Aligning fluorescent tubes (5600K) with Tungsten light (3200K)
  • Light Control: Reduces transmission by 0.5 stops
  • Effect Design: Removes green cast from practical light sources
  • Efficiency Improvement: Eliminates color correction in post-production

Technical Details

Specifications of the Lee 251:

  • Transmission: 79% at 550nm
  • Thickness: 0.1mm polycarbonate
  • Color Temperature Shift: -800K (towards Tungsten)
  • Compatible with standard filter holders and barndoors

Practical Tips

  • Open exposure by 1/2 stop when using
  • Use a spot meter to control color temperature
  • Do not bend - polycarbonate breaks irreparably
  • Store dry, avoid direct sunlight

Professional Standards

The Lee 251 enables:

  • Uniform color temperature between artificial and daylight
  • Instant correction without lamp changes
  • Reduced grip costs due to less relighting
  • Broadcast-compliant color reproduction according to Rec. 709
