Compact camera the size of a lipstick tube — fits into spaces no conventional camera can reach. Essential for POV shots and hidden perspectives in tight spaces.
You know the problem: the action takes place in a phone booth, a closet, or you need a perspective from inside a box. A normal camera won't fit, and even a compact camera is still too big. This is where you reach for the lipstick camera — a tiny device the size of a thick lipstick, offering real freedom in positioning. It weighs next to nothing, has an integrated lens (usually around 90–100°), and you can operate it with a thin cable or wirelessly to a monitor.
On set, the lipstick camera proves its worth in two main scenarios: Firstly, for extreme POV shots — when a character is looking out from a hiding place, when you put the camera in a laundry basket, or peer through a high window. Secondly, for establishing or detail shots that are spatially confined and where you don't want to bring in larger equipment. The image quality is, of course, not 4K UHD level; you get a functional, often grainy image with a flat look, which is very useful for found-footage effects or realistic surveillance camera looks.
Important in practice: The signal is not always stable over long distances, especially wirelessly. Some models connect via USB or Mini-HDMI, others are true wireless cameras with their own battery. When shooting, you need to know where your monitor is and how long your cable runs are. The image is small and dark — you'll need an additional LED ring or a flashlight setup in low light. Focus adjustment is also manual and fiddly; anything too close will be out of focus. Therefore, you often work with a larger depth of field — small aperture, higher ISO, compensated with plenty of light.
In modern productions, I use the lipstick camera less for critical A-roll and more for B-material, insert shots, and atmos recordings where the raw look fits the aesthetic. However, for those working with extreme tightness or hidden perspectives, this tool saves a lot of hassle with framing and gives the set more creative flexibility. Also, remember: these things are inexpensive to acquire, robust, and will forgive a fall better than any other camera on the cart.
