Technical Details
The LiteMat 4 achieves a light output of 8,500 lumens at full power and a CRI of over 95. Dimming is stepless from 0-100% without color shift via DMX512, local potentiometers, or wireless controllers. The panel weighs 2.3 kg and can be mounted using standard spigot mounts or magnetic holders. Power is supplied either via a 100-240V AC power supply or 12-30V DC batteries. Variants include the smaller LiteMat 2 (305 x 305 mm) and the larger LiteMat 8 (610 x 1220 mm).
History & Development
LiteGear developed the first LiteMat panel in 2011 in response to the demand for flat, evenly illuminating LED surfaces for confined shooting situations. The fourth generation was introduced in 2016, offering bi-color functionality in an ultra-thin design for the first time. The Spectrum series followed in 2019 with RGB functionality, while the classic LiteMat panels were continuously optimized for light output and color rendering.
Practical Use in Film
Roger Deakins used LiteMat panels for interior lighting in "Blade Runner 2049" (2017) to achieve even illumination without visible light sources. The low profile allows them to be hidden behind mirrors, under tables, or in alcoves. Typical applications include fill light in vehicles, hidden practicals on sets, or as a large-area softbox alternative. The disadvantage lies in the limited light intensity compared to point-source LED panels of the same wattage.
Comparison & Alternatives
Unlike conventional LED panels such as the Arri SkyPanel S60 (25,000 lumens, but 20cm depth), the LiteMat 4 prioritizes compactness over light output. Modern alternatives like the Creamsource Vortex4 offer similar area illumination with higher light output but do not achieve the extreme flatness of the LiteMat. For maximum light output, the Arri SkyPanel remains the first choice, while the LiteMat 4 is ideal for hidden integration into sets.
