On set or in post-production, you need clarity quickly: The high-pass filter removes annoying high frequencies — sibilance, electrical hum, wind noise — and leaves dialogue and music intact. Contrary to its name, it attenuates everything above a defined cutoff frequency, while letting low tones pass. This is its central function, and the term can sometimes be confusing: In English-speaking contexts, it's often called a low-pass filter, which is the same effect — just named from a different perspective.
In practice, you use a high-pass filter on almost all original sound. A wireless microphone hanging near power lines will pick up 50 Hz hum — a short HP filter at 80 or 100 Hz will cut this away without damaging the voice. For ambient sounds or rain recordings, you use it to reduce low-frequency rumble. In editing, sound designers regularly work with parametric EQs that have a high-pass filter as a basic tool — often even as a fixed automation on every dialogue track.
The cutoff frequency is individual: For a female voice, you can be more aggressive at 100–150 Hz; for a male bass voice, more like 80–120 Hz. Applied too aggressively, the dialogue will sound thin and artificial — too timid, and you'll still hear the hum. A gradual slope (like 12 dB/octave or 24 dB/octave) is more subtle than brick-wall filtering. Some mixers work with multiple filters in parallel: a broad, gentle high-pass filter automation and a second, sharper one, only when absolutely necessary.
Important: Do not confuse the high-pass filter with the low-pass filter — the latter attenuates high frequencies but is less common as a standard tool. A high-pass filter is essential, often the first step in mixing, even before a compressor or reverb. Many digital mixers and DAWs have it as a button directly on the channel; analog desks usually have it as a separate EQ block.
