Music & Effects Track — a sound mix without dialogue, used for international versions and dubbing.

Technical Details

M&E tracks are delivered by default in the same format as the main mix - typically as a 5.1 or 7.1 surround mix at 48 kHz/24 bit. The stems include separately mixed music elements (score, source music), atmospheres, Foley sounds, and sound effects in their original channel assignment. Modern M&E deliveries additionally include stem variants without music for countries with differing music rights. For Dolby Atmos productions, M&E versions are delivered as a separate Atmos master with up to 128 audio objects.

History & Development

The systematic creation of M&E tracks became established in the 1930s with the advent of international film distribution. MGM developed the first standardized workflows for M&E tracks in 1938 for efficient synchronization of their productions. In the 1960s, European co-productions led to refined M&E standards, as multilingual versions were planned during production. Since the 1990s, international distributors have required M&E deliveries as a standard component of every film package.

Practical Application in Film

For "Mad Max: Fury Road" (2015), Sound Designer Mark Mangini created separate M&E stems for over 200 vehicle sounds, which were identically adopted in 47 language versions. Complex scenes such as explosion sequences require detailed M&E planning, as dubbed screams and commands must be seamlessly integrated into the existing soundscape. Action productions often use "Filled M&E" - extended versions with additional fill sounds at points of later dialogue placement.

Comparison & Alternatives

Unlike the "International Sound Track," M&E does not contain English dialogue or text elements. "Unfilled M&E" delivers only original sounds without fills for dialogue pauses, while "Filled M&E" bridges these gaps with atmospheres. Music-and-Effects premixes differ from final M&E tracks by not yet having completed balancing. For low-budget productions, simplified "MX tracks" (Music/Effects without stem separation) replace full M&E deliveries.
